ARE YOU REALLY DEFINING WHAT YOU NEED FROM YOUR TEAMS?

Translating, explaining and demonstrating what you vision is, what needs to happen is hard. It is not complex just hard. Humans are involved.

Leaders know what they need to achieve in profit and loss terms.

But many seldom explain what it means in delivery terms. These are the terms that translate the ‘picture of success’.

When it is clear the leader themselves, those they lead and everyone who they influence knows. They know what they want to see, hear and feel when they are achieving.

By knowing it creates the foundation for success as everyone knows how they can make real impact. Every decision, source of human energy and connections is focused.

The story often unfolds like this:

Leader says “We need to raise our game”

Managers all say “yes we do”

Leader says. Well nothing. The leader assumes all managers knows what they need to do.

Manager says. Well nothing. Because they assume all managers know what they need to do. They don’t want to be the one who puts their head above the parapet. They assume this might show a sign of weakness.

All managers are eager to understand what does that mean for me. They want an answer to:

“How best can we raise our game”.

“How can I raise my game?”

So time passes by.

Not much if anything changes.

Leader says “we are not raising our game”

Managers say nothing.

The cycle continues. The leader frustration grows.

Are you familiar with this?

Are you guilty of asking for something that you haven’t worked out what it means to you let alone your managers and their teams?

The trick is in the translation.

It is the most used word in conversations I am having with leaders and their teams right now.

When you have made the time to translate, you gain the biggest impact with progress.

If you are here you could do this to help:

1. What will I be doing when I am raising my game?

2. What do I need to change to get there?

3. How am I going to stay accountable to this?

Then ask the same of individuals in the team.

Then the team as a whole.

It is simple really. But we know that the environment around us changes all the time and humans are slow to build new habits and approaches to what they do.

As a leader you have to call on your own inner strength to not just translate but maintain the energy through unfolding the translation.

Be the supportive leader who takes the time to genuinely care and guide.

If you don’t translate know one will know what needs to happen. Humans will create their own version.

Translating, explaining and demonstrating what you vision is, what needs to happen is hard. It is not complex just hard. Humans are involved.

When will you start?
